Hello, I was recently told by my internal medicine doctor, after years of cataloging symptoms, that she was going to begin treating me for Lupus. She started me on the generic version of Plaquenil at 200 mg. I have had a really hard time on this medicine. I have had extreme nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and intense vertigo. I began taking it on Thanksgiving day and still experience these. May 26, 2014 Some other sjoggies have experienced diarrhea as a side effect. But I don't recall the outcome for them. Hopefully some of them will pick up on your thread. I get your point about not wanting to be dancing the green apple quickstep during the night when you need to be resting, but I will add this on how I started Plaquenil. I had severe nausea and diarrhea when started on Plaquenil 2 X 200mg tabs once daily almost 3yrs ago. As I also have Crohn's Disease and an Ileostomy this was putting me at serious risk. I was told to stop the Plaquenil until my GI symptoms disappeared.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

Plaquenil is the brand name of hydroxychloroquine, a drug used to prevent or treat malaria 2. Plaquenil is also used for long-term treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis RA and systemic lupus erythmatosis. Plaquenil is a slow-acting drug, meaning that it can take up to 6 months to experience the full benefits of this medication, but it is possible for symptoms to improve in as few as 1 or 2 months. Plaquenil and other antimalarials are the key to controlling lupus long-term, and some lupus patients may be on Plaquenil for the rest of their lives. One of the reasons that physicians feel comfortable in prescribing Plaquenil is its low risk to benefit ratio. This means that the side effects of Plaquenil are mild and infrequent compared with its potential benefits. As with any medication, allergic reactions including skin rashes and non-allergic reactions can occur.
