LPP is an uncommon scalp disease which diagnosis remains a challenge due to epidemiological data lacking and especially to the increasing number of patients in which lesions and symptoms are not clearly visible or evaluable if limited to patient clinical history and clinical observations. This led, in most cases, to a wrong diagnosis. Hydroxychloroquine is a useful drug for treating the condition though it requires a minimum of 4 months treatment to note its effectiveness. When it works, it can be continued until remission. When used long term, retinal damage is a possibility but the risk is reduced by keeping dosage low. Scarring alopecia affects both men and women, and it can cause irreversible damage of the hair follicles, replacing them with scar tissue. This article describes its definition and treatments.
