Hydroxychloroquine HCQ is a 4-aminoquinoline which differs from chloroquine CQ in the addition of a hydroxyl group. Initially used as antimalarials, both drugs have now become mainstays in the management of rheumatic diseases principally systemic lupus erythematosus SLE and rheumatoid arthritis RA. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is a one of a number of drugs which have been used for many years in the treatment of malaria. Fortunately, it was discovered these drugs often are helpful in the treatment of various rheumatic diseases, particularly systemic lupus erythematosus SLE or "Lupus" and rheumatoid arthritis. Plaquenil Hydroxychloroquine is used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus & others.

Jun 11, 2013 Study Raises Questions about Sjogren's and Plaquenil. For many patients with Sjogren's, Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine has long been the go to drug that their doctors prescribe. It is often the first line of attack before other more aggressive therapies are added such as methotrexate or rituximab that have bigger impacts on the immune system. However, in some cases, pericarditis may be caused by non-infectious agents, such as certain medications and drugs, in which case it is called Drug-Induced Pericarditis The common medications that are known to cause Drug-Induced Pericarditis include isoniazid, cyclosporine, warfarin, heparin, and other drugs. This is because Plaquenil has been studied and shown to help manage lupus symptoms like muscle and joint pain, skin rashes, pericarditis, pleuritis, and even fatigue. It has also been shown to reduce the risk of further organ damage in lupus patients when taken for long term management of lupus.
